In November, Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to present a solo show from our Resident Artist in SMOL, Kimberly Sewell: HOME IS…, and an open call for entries: TENEBRISM.
HOME IS… Exploring the concept of “home” following a series of major life changes, artist Kimberly Sewell pres- ents a solo exhibition, HOME IS... in conjunction with Cottonwood Center for the Arts. This body of work, created in response to the SMOL residency format of considering how to work small and how our physical space can impact our physical work, Kimberly has assembled a largely autobiographical collec- tion of felted wool sculptures and abstract watercolor paintings. Each piece attempts to answer the question “what does home mean to me?” as Kimberly has navigated divorce, downsizing, and a cancer diagnosis. HOME IS... will include mixed media soft sculptures, traditional two dimensional paintings, and interactive installations that invite the viewers to answer for themselves what HOME IS...
TENEBRISM is a term used to define a rich and even shocking contrast of bold lighting against heavy saturated shadows, with many compositions being dominated by the negative space of darkness surrounding the subject matter. For this call we are asking artists to challenge themselves by illuminating their subject with a single candle, either metaphorically or literally. How much of your image can you swallow in shadow to express the import of what remains?
