DISCARDED BOOK SUMMER

THE DISCARDED BOOK:
SUMMER AT THE FARMERS MARKET
INSTRUCTOR: JESSICA SPERLING

Recommended for ages 18+

The one thing I think about in the middle of summer is Saturday mornings going to the farmers market… just a beautiful morning smelling the fresh baked breads and soaps, looking at the most beautifully colored crisp fruits and vegetables, and picturing those whimsical wildflowers from the flower stand brightening up your living room… but not in this series of unfortunate farmers market events discarded book!

The market items have morphed into monsters/bears/dragons (whatever your heart desires) and are on a mission to create fun, chaos, drama, or whatever you want them to do in our created market pages from upcycled materials found at a farmers market.

Through this book we will be creating art experiments with collage, acrylic/watercolor painting, upcycling, textile art and working with air dry clay. No two books will be the same as each of you have your own creative take. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary! Let’s have fun and see how our fun stories unfold.

MATERIALS
Please bring $20 for your supplies, payable to your instructor at the start of the first class session. Any farmers market packaging is welcome but not required.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

I’ve always made art—drawn to the freedom of nature and creating without asking permission. A bit of a rebel (rules of thirds? never heard of her), I follow instinct over instruction, letting curiosity, experiment, mistakes, and feeling lead the way. Over time, I’ve developed a personal, unpolished style rooted in emotion and imperfection. I’m drawn to what’s been discarded—scraps, stains, forgotten objects—and find beauty in giving them new life through texture, layering, and story and incorporating nature into all things. My work is about reclaiming beauty in what’s been cast aside and not seen then giving it a new life because these discarded things still have something to say.
