ART THEORY
TRUSTING YOUR EYE | ART THEORY 101
INSTRUCTOR: CHELSEA TARNAS
This class offers students a foundation to develop their own personal philosophies on art and allows them space to discuss these observations in a supportive setting. There is no right or wrong, and my only expectation of students is to come with an open mind, curiosity, and the ability to find a new lens to appreciate art through.
I will present the most common theories of art, such as Formalist and Institutional theories of art, and the class will engage in discourse about the differences, the learner’s own understanding of the theories, and how to appreciate art under each concept. By the end of the course, the learner will be able to observe art with a new found understanding of the purpose of art in our personal lives, our culture, and history.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
I am a multimedia artist with a focus in mono printing, painting, and collage. I am a professional art handler and restorer and have been in the fine arts trades for over a decade. My artistic style has been developed through studies in fine art, art history, and political science, and my intimate exposure to a vast array of art collections from around the world. I graduated from Hope College in Holland Michigan, with a BA in Studio Art, in 2011. In 2010, I attended the New York Center for Arts and Media Studies in New York City, where I mentored under world renowned gallerist, Max Protetch. I received an MBA in Sustainable Systems and Entrepreneurship, and a Certificate in Cooperatives from Presidio Graduate School in 2018, where much of my studies were focused on the intersection of art and business.
