PLEIN AIR DRAWING WORKSHOP
INSTRUCTOR: EMILY SULLIVAN

During this one-day workshop, we will explore plein air drawing using a variety of drawing techniques. Most of the day will be spent outside, so bring sunscreen, comfortable shoes, water, and a portable chair if desired. Your materials should similarly be easy to tote around — a small to mid sized sketchbook, or several sheets of drawing paper. Drawing tools could include pencils, charcoal, ink pen. The scale you work is up to you, but we will be making LOTS of drawings in the spirit of a “field-guide.” The day will start at Cottonwood with a brief lecture on plein air drawing going back to 19th century artist-explorers, and also include contemporary approaches and drawing methods. We will have a break for lunch with an optional participation in a reading discussion, sent prior to class. You will leave class with several “finished” sketches and the tools to continue maintaining a sketchbook or more finished drawings en plein air.
