OIL PAINTING FOUNDATIONS:
UNDERSTANDING MONOCHROMATIC PAINTING
INSTRUCTOR: JESS PREBLE

Part of the Foundations of Oil Paint series by Jess Preble. This 4 week session will introduce and demystify monochromatic oil painting (painting using only one color plus black and white). You will have the opportunity to focus on becoming comfortable with oil paint while using simple and inexpensive materials. We will learn the importance of value scales in application, learning what is dynamic lighting and composition, as well as the importance of negative space and atmospheric tone to create form. In this class we will also learn brush sketching - rendering our subject matter using only our paint brushes as our method of measurement. All our work will be based off painting from life - objects that are physically in front of us. This begins teaching our brains how to translate life onto the canvas.

We will be using still life subject material in this class, with the exception of our homework, which will vary by assignment.

This class is preceded by the “Black, White and Gray” series of lessons, which is not a prerequisite, but recommended to take!

You will finish this series with 1 - 2 completed monochromatic oil paintings, and bragging rights of having finally gone out and taken an oil painting class!
