Artist's Statement

"My paintings are an expression of life experiences ... a moment in time. The subject matter is secondary to an intangible quality that expresses the beauty of the human spirit. It may be majestic mountain peaks, an Italian fisherman mending nets, the human form, or an arrangement of flowers. If I connect with it from my soul, I will paint it."

Artist's Biography

Kay Jeansonne was born in the heart of Cajun country near Lafayette, Louisiana. Her interest in art began at an early age as she watched her dad paint the wildlife of the rich swamplands of Acadiana.

Kay's interest in art continued to develop at Louisiana State University where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. At LSU she studied intaglio, lithography, and painting. She also later received Master of Arts degree from University of Southwestern Louisiana.

Kay now resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She attended Cottonwood Artists' School, where she studied with Skip Whitcomb, Carolyn Anderson, Matt Smith, and Kim English. Her work includes landscapes, still lifes, and figurative paintings in oils, as well as figurative sculpture and charcoal drawings. In 2001 she gave up a full time teaching career to pursue her dream of painting full time. She became the director of Cottonwood Artists' School in 2002, where she now teaches drawing and painting. At Cottonwood Kay is involved in decision making for the school. The majority of her time is spent painting in her studio, attending life drawing sessions, and painting on location outdoors.

Kay is a member of Oil Painters of America.

Selected shows include: 2007 Oil Painters of America National Show, Whistle Pik Gallery, Fredericksburg, TX; 2008 and 2007 Invitational Landscape Show, Dana Gallery, Missoula, MT; 2007 Oil Painters of America Central Regional Show, West Wind Gallery, Topeka, KS; 2005 and 2006 Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters Invitational Show, Elk Horn Gallery, Winter Park, CO.
