INTRO TO OIL PAINTING: BLACK AND WHITE
INSTRUCTOR: JESS PREBLE

Part of the Foundations of Oil Paint series by Jess Preble. This 4 week session will introduce and demystify the complex nature of black, white and gray painting. You will have the opportunity to focus on becoming comfortable with oil paint while using simple and inexpensive materials. We will learn the importance of value scales in application, learning what is dynamic lighting and composition, as well as the importance of negative space and atmospheric tone to create form. In this class we will also learn brush sketching - rendering our subject matter using only our paint brushes as our method of measurement. All our work will be based off painting from life - objects that are physically in front of us. This begins teaching our brains how to translate life onto the canvas.

We will be using still life subject material in this class, with the exception of our homework, which will vary by assignment.

You will finish this series with 1 - 2 completed black and white oil paintings, and bragging rights of having finally gone out and taken an oil painting class!

MATERIALS
4 basic canvases - Try a few different sizes, with at least one being 16x20 or larger. Only 4 will be needed for the whole class
Flat surface to use as palette - Can be a plate, palette paper, piece of thick glass, metal tray, thick piece of plastic, etc. Please do NOT bring palettes with indentations or bowls/dips/cups.
1 glass jar with lid
Small palette knife
Odorless mineral spirits or paint thinner - Can be purchased in hardware department of Walmart.
Cotton rags/old T shirt/old towel
Paint brushes - I recommend a #4, #6 and a few bigger. Try a couple different shapes - Filbert, Bright, Flat, and Round. Please make sure your brushes are designed for oil paint, as brushes for other types of paint will dissolve/fall apart in paint thinner.

Titanium White oil paint
Lamp Black oil paint
Small palette knife
A sense of humor and humility
