INTRO TO FIBER REACTIVE DYES
In collaboration with New Hue Textile Studio
In this class, we will learn the basic fundamentals of Procion MX Fiber Reactive Dyes, including how to safely mix dyes, how to thicken them with alginate, and how to apply color directly to fabric. We will be making a color wheel for reference as well as practicing learned techniques to create a piece of fabric using (3) different colors or cotton yardage.
Day One: Students will learn how and fiber reactive dyes were developed as well as a brief lesson in their chemistry, with examples of their use. They will also learn how to make print paste and mix colors.
Day Two: Students will work on their color wheel project, as well as learn how to steam and wash cloth in preparation for dying.
Day Three: We will receive our cotton fabric and begin to play around with designs.
Day Four: We will finish up our fabric by steaming them, ending up with a one-of-a-kind piece of fiber art as well as the foundational knowledge of how to use fiber reactive dyes!
All materials will be provided for a $20 fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class.
